Till a few years ago, millions of people in India were prone to bacterial attacks and the supply of antibiotics in the country was considerably short. Penicillin-G, an important intermediary substance in the manufacture of antibiotics, was largely imported. That is, till SPIC Pharma commenced large-scale Penicillin-G production. Today, SPIC Pharma holds a sizeable 60% share of the Penicillin-G market in India.

It was in 1994 that the SPIC group identified antibiotics as a thrust area and built a plant in Cuddalore near Chennai, with an investment of Rs.220 crores to manufacture Penicillin-G pharmagrades & First Crystals.

The commercial production commenced in June 1995 and the present capacity is 2000 MMU per annum. The plant is the only unit approved for Pencillin G Potassium by US FDA in India. It has a well-equipped analytical lab with modern instruments for quality control.

The plant is supported by a highly advanced microbiology laboratory and pilot plant with fermenters. It also houses a modern effluent treatment plant with anaerobic digesters followed by two-stage aeration system for treating the effluent and meeting the most stringent quality standards.
